Hi,

my horse has had joint problems etc and i have been feeding him on low starch and sugar feeds and definitely no mixes on nuts and pellet type feeds. Hes a warmblood 16.3hh and has his days that hes v forward and others where hes a bit like walking thru mud til u get him going. I'm getting him fit but i think that because hes not on a sugary diet hes lacking in the energy department. He looks really well and is a good doer and i have to keep his weight down due to his previous joint problem. Hes a super weight, iv had him on hi-fi original and then nuts, i have had him on oats and barley rings before but it made little difference. Any ideas for getting the zing back into my horse??

Hes a tricky one with his feed restrictions! I think im going to put him back on oil but would really love any ideas on a new feed for him, need the spark back!

Thanks for your thoughts guys in advance!

Phone Baileys horse feeds (thier number is on their website) and they will give you free advice over the phone, or come out to you for free and assess you and your horse. they are really good imo.

Simple Systems - old Cairo has so much more stamina since being on it, I also feed their total eclipse supplement and since having instant linseed his joints are really improved.

Well worth giving them a call.

Ditto simple systems - phone them or e-mail and they are happy toigive advice, they do loads of different things based on alfafa or grass with no sugar or cereals. They have feeds suitable for overweight laminitics right up to endurance, competion and rachorses.

I use Dodson and Horrell ERS pellets, Just a handful in his feed and i notice a big difference in his energy levels. They are low in starch as well.

My horse is exactly the same with feed intolerance - I can't feed starch, sugars or anything remotely resembling cereals. Alfa A turned him into a pyscho. He's also a pretty poor doer, so it was incredibly hard to get the weight and condition without blowing his brain or bringing on azoturia.

The only thing I've found he works well with is Hi Fi Lite, Hi Fibre Cubes, and soya oil, with Equivite. The Hi Fibre cubes, whilst still being low in starch and sugar, have added a bit more zing to him (not that he's ever been lacking in zing!) but in a good way.

Incidentally, I tried him on Simple Systems - spend loads on my first order of everything they'd recommended - and he wouldn't go near it. Couldn't persuade him to eat any of it, despite introducing it gradually and adding carrots etc.

if he has joint issues i would guess its either pain or mechanical issues that make him harder to get going one day and not another.i wouldnt advise feeding a horse like that up to make his fizzy tbh.
as he is a good doer and tends to be overweight i wouldnt feed him anything that would put more on-this will make him more lazy and possibly make his joints worse.
i would say to use a low starch and sugar feed like dodson and horrel made for horses that tie up and work on schooling him off the leg and build up his fitness.

You should look at the new WINERGY Equilibrium feeds. I saw them at Burghly and my vet thinks they are amazing.

They are a range of scientifically proven fibre feeds that have a whole load of health benefits you can't get from traditional feeds.

My vet spoke to them and they sent me some feed to try - it's amazing stuff. I wouldn't change her off it now and feel much more reassured as it has been formulated by vets and scientists so I don't have to guess or go off my friends advice. It can be really confusing when so many people have a diferent opinion!
