Can anyone suggest any feed that might liven up a laid back event horse- he needs a bit more oomph! He is currently on pasture mix, hi fi, oats and sugar beet twice per day but he just needs a little more go.

we have also tried comp mix but it makes no difference.

Spillers slow release cubes are very good.

Have you had a blood test done though. Could be slightly aneamic??

He has been blood tested and I am pretty sure he isn't bored- he has a varied work routine- lunging, hacking, loose schooling, flatwork, jumping and xc schooling etc.

He has always been like that tbh but we need him a little livley for the eventing season.

When you find it let me know!!!!!! Donkey seems to only turbo for hunting then back down to Donkey as soon as it is over.

My instructor says the only way to get laid back horses to increase their energy is through fitness - I have tried most things with Donkey - If someone says it sends their horse loopy I try it - not had any results yet!

I would knock out the pasture mix and the hifi and go for something like Alfa A. He's not necessarily consuming a balanced diet on what he has right now and may be lacking in something, hence the perceived laziness.

I agree with KatB. I give Megan Equine America Propell to give her a bit more sparkle, it certain livens her up without making her silly. She looks fab on it too!! I recommended it to a lady at the yard and she is also very impressed

Try some high iron products, such as

Blood Liquid
Propell plus
Red cell
Equisup

They all give pickle a boost, when he get a bit tired and not teribly lively. Pickle gets exactly the same feed type as yours, so it could be worth a try.

word of warning - my mums cob was fed heating foods to 'speed him up' and ended up having a nasty stumble and being out of work for 6 months!

Power mix!! Its crazy feed. Mine was on it while point to point training and it certainly made him more forward going and willing.

Add a feed balancer/pink powders...maybe he is lacking in some vitamins/minerals.
Top spec feed balancer is good and they will send it to you free of delivery charges.

We feed Dodson & Horrell Build Up to a pony of ours that was lean when we got it & it has had the side effect of making him v.buzzy as well as weight gain (he was on the idle side when he arrived) so may be worth a go

i had a very laid back cob - the only thing that gave her sparkle was racing mix/and or oats - if you feed just oats dontforget oat balencer

We used Instant Response (can't remeber who makes it) for daughter previous pony it was only thing we found gave him a little more oomph. We tried oats, tiger oats combination of things including propell nothing really worked despite pony being half TB.He used to get a double scoop of response on show days.

Naked Oats, fab for a laid back horse or one with lack of stamina, start off with a small amount and build to the amount that best suits your horse, fab product I use with one of my SJ's who is a large horse and no matter how fit he needs these oats for added stamina. These really do work so don't over feed them, the Olympic eventing team used them last Olympics most feed stores stock them or can get them.
