He's only just stopped racing, as in last Saturday. I was just wondering what to put him on while he's being let down? Any views? Presumably something high fibre, low starch, low protein. I'm also thinking of giving him some gastroguard or similar as a precaution and possibly an allrounder balancer although we have good grass and depending on other feed, I believe this probably isn't necessary. Anything else you'd recommend?

Thanks

Hi I reschool and retrain ex racehorses - have three of my own (rejects i couldn't part with lol)

i always put mine on the same - suga beet, molichaff, and conditioning nuts, if yours has come out and is looking ribby just give him beet and chaff until he's come down a little - don't make the mistake of thinking that he's thin because he's hungry he's not 'he's fit!' lol
let me know how you get on!! i love to hear about other peoples experiences. :)

To be honest he's less ribby than our non ex-racer TB mare and I'm under no illusions as to how fit he is :D So you're suggesting wait a little before giving anything for condition?

I will eventually put him on the micronised linseed as I find this helps hugely with their coats and general condition.

Thanks for your help.

Hi- I've found a great diet for my ex-racer- very simple, cost effective & she looks amazing on it! I ended up feeding this after it was suspected she has a mollases allergy so i wanted something natural & non-heating but that would also help with condition. She was underweight & poor, and this has transformed her. Since January she looks like a different horse, now very well covered (in fact a bit too much!) and gleaming soft coat, plus it doesnt send her crazy, as a fcouple of conditioning feeds have:

[*]Dengie Alf-alfa pellets- SOAKED- i give 1 scoop (of dry nuts) in each feed (about £8 a bag)

[*]Micronised Linseed- i give 1 small cup in each feed (you can get 20kg bag for about £20 from Charnwood Milling)

[*]Equine answers 365- feed balancer with pre/ probiotics

[*]Ad lib hay

The great thing is you can increase/ decrease the amount of linseed depending on condition. The soaked alf alfa pellets are also a great base for adding supplements.

365 is great, i have my 33 year old on it and she has never looked better :-)

Mine just gets 1-2 scoops of fibre nuts a day with a couple mini scoops of pink powder and ad lib hay. He looks a picture:-

I can't be arsed with a million different things or counting mollasses or starch or whatever so just keep it simple.
