My 17yo shetland has been suffering on and off with lami for the past year but finally she has been sound for the past 2 months. But the only way to keep her sound is to keep her permanently off the grass. She comes in at night and goes out into our hardcored yard during the day. She's let out nown and again into a paddock to blow off steam (but brought in before she can take one munch!). She's fed 2 handfuls of Safe & Sound twice a day with an all round vit & min supplement, NAF Superflex and Soya Oil. She also gets high fibre nuts in her Snak-A-Ball once or twice a day. Of course, she has as much hay as she wants.

But Ive found she's lost a bit of weight which is a good thing with lami's I know! But she's never been overweight anyway, so I feel she'd be a little on the too-slim side underneath her winter coat. This might be because of her age as well. All her feed is lami-approved, but Im wondering if there's something else I could add to give her a few more calories safely?

Agree with Fairhill, just feed more of lami safe food, rather than trying other options. Either increase the Safe & Sound or feed something like High Fibre Cubes or Spiller's Happy Hoof.

If you want to put condition on the pony, you will have to exercise it to... or all you will put on is fat.

I woudl just give it more hay, and something like calm and condition which is low sugar, low starch, high oil.

[/ QUOTE ] Personally I wouldn't risk feeding Calm and Condition to a laminitic - although it is advertised as free from barley and oats, the last time I looked at the ingredients list it contained maize, and I wouldn't feed any cereal to a laminitic.

I have safely added speedi beet to my laminitics feed when he has needed to gain some weight but add it very carefully to the diet. I beleive it is laminitis trust approved.

I definately would not feed any cereal based feed at all.

Alfa beet. Fab stuff and Lami approved

winergy equilibrium growth. i know you'll all moan at me for saying it again ha ha!!! but it really does work and is completely safe - our cushings pony is thriving on it.

Nice festive pics TGM!

Linseed oil is safe for laminitics. Hi- fibre cubes are safe together with ad-lib hay as you are doing.

I'd steer clear of anything containing cereals/starch- a lot of conditiong feeds/cubes contain this so I'd just up the hay and fibre intake.

I was looking at the new Topspec cool condition cubes and they apparently don't contain any of the above however with Laminitics IMO it's best to err on the side of caution and also make any changes gradual.

Echo Tiggy 1 - have a pony who is a former chronic laminitic (8% rotation in fronts, 4% in hinds) and she is thriving these days on Simple Systems lucibix, which I bulk out in the evenings with Happy Hoof purely because it is more convenient to buy so saves me constantly having to order SS. SS is the bulk of her feed though and keeps her from getting too skinny!
