Yes I know this comes from correct work! However, although horse is now working correctly- She has lost weight all of a sudden and now those muscles arent showing topline because there just isnt enough weight on her. Shes just looking a bit sunken and TB like...

She is quite sharp, is currently on a totally sugar free diet to keep her calm and this is working... but i need protein and condition...

shes on 2 feeds of...
500g of SS Lucie cubes
500g of Blue Bag Grass pellets
500g of Gedi grass

so 1k of each in total per day

Shes on add lib hay and always has some left in the morning

Shes grazing out every day and works about 3 days a week for an hour.

She is wormed so I know its not that.
She is being fed the reccomendation by SS but im not sure its enough... what do you think?

What else can I give her thats not full of added sugars?

alfa a oil ans speedibeet - probably not what you want to hear but it works.......

If you need to get more calories into her and you don't want to feed cereals then you need to add oil of some sort - either straight oil, oil-containing seeds (such as linseed or sunflower seeds) or a commercial high oil product (Outshine, Equijewel etc).

If your horse is going to lose weight it invariably will be towards the end of January, beginning of February, that's what I find every year.
My lad, Hann x TB, has retained his topline this year, he's in regular work /schooling & has two meals a day, Ride & Relax, Blue Chip, Hifi Lite & carrots. He has adlib hay aswell. This works for him & his weight has remained about normal, 520kg. We manage his paddock reasonably well & we have not had to put hay out in the field so far. He is however only out about 5/6 hours a day at the moment.
There is so much contradictory advice put on this forum regarding feeding that it can really cause more confusiuon than it helps sometimes. It may be better that you contact one of the feed company advice lines & they will advise you. They don't rubbish each others products either, they give sound advice.

i just started feeding jay top line cubes & i have to say i am seeing a difference

Try adding some instant linseed and/or black sunflower seeds - I feed both to my little chap.

When getting Chancer ready for the show season I do increase the linseed - he is on the SS diet but has green gold and lucie stalks - as he a gypsy cob so not to difficult to put muscle and weight on. I also as a temporary measure gave him spillars conditioning cubes - I personally swear by them for putting on weight but not sending them daft.

I've just put Darce on Allen and Page calm and condition with the view to going on to ride and relax next. He dropped weight a little after he came home from his working holiday (possibly the shock of having 5 days in 24/7 and then coming home and going back out like normal

The allen and page leaflet is very useful and it sounds like your little orange mare would be ok on the 'sugar and cereal intolerance diet' feed.

Calm and Condition is barley free for putting on condition and keeping the horse calm. no barely or oats, low in starch, high oil balance of linseed and soya oil.

[/ QUOTE ] But last time I checked the ingredients (which now seem to have been removed from the website) it did contain maize, which is starchier than either oats or barley! From what I've heard it suits some horses, but others fizz up on it.

Eek, I just wrote what's in the leaflet that the rep gave me

I don't know. He's been on it 2 days so waiting to see what happens

All it says in the leaflet is what I have put and then nutitional analysis oil, 5.5%, protein 12%
fibre, 11.5%, Est Dig En 12.5 mj/kg, starch 19% calcium 1.1 then vits.

It also mentions fighting the fizz... look at levels of oil and fibre. higher fibre and oil will normally have less starch so better for a really fizzy horse. It's the fast release energy from starch that can cause problems even for horses that are not intolerant to cereal.
So it'l be interesting to see if he fizzes up off it which is the last thing i need!!

As you are on teh Simple systems feeds - try adding in their Pura beet - a totally unmollassed beet - and their linseed. It is fantastic stuff. Also depending on how she is you can use the red label grass nuts. I have one horse who only keeps weight on with the red label and he doesn't get fizzy on them

Give jane a call at Simple Systems and tell her what your problem is and she will recommend a suitable mix of their products

I would not mix the Simple Systems with anything else as you are feeding it for a reason.

my horse fizzed up on c&c, build up and no. 4

he is now on winergy equilibrium growth and is doign great on it

top spec cool condition cubes are very good too

what sort of time frame are you giving as saying the topline is not coming along quick as you'd expect?
if you can i'd asses the work quality and quantity. perhaps a pessoa may help [never used one myself but they seem v highly recommended], more hill work etc.

i work my mare 4-5 times a week and any changes still come along very slowly.
currently i'm trying to pick her up out of winter condition (been hunting so she is looking quite lean) and starting to get her ready for showing, i'm starting now and wouldnt expect her to be better muscled up and her topline to have really come along nicely until about april/may time.
however he feed habits v diff to yours she is a good doer & fatty prone so i dont focus on feeding, more the schooling (which i hate and so does she) and a lot of fitness work - with the added help on Naff pink powder which her condition seems to blossom on.

my mare is very fizzy [and a strop bag] so id be keen to know more about a sugar free diet. Do you really notice a difference that you really feel is down to the diet change?
