After ditching the last prospect due to the dodgy back leg, I went back to the breeder of my first horse, and voila, she had a perfect 4 legged man waiting for me. pending a vetting, he will be coming home, and whilst i have a feeding plan forming, would like to gather some thoughts and opinions.

The general over view is that he is a late 4 year old (was only 4 in june), been backed and in work 2 months, 16,3hh, not particularly fizzy or exuberant, and Selle Francais. He is ropey- not thin per se, just under muscled, and tbh i would like him a touch on the lighter side to begin with anyway. My only feeding aims are for him to remain calm and slowly put on condition.

If he comes to us (fingers crossed!) I planned for him to be on 80/20 hay to haylage ratio, a suitable amount of alfa - a, and a mix i havent decided on yet. My sisters 5 y.o is happily on D&H build up, but my mare (who is older, 17) is on saracen, which i prefer. She seems to be in better general condition than the 5 yo- obv there are many other factors that could be influencing this, but generally i trust saracen and would like their advice on which of their mixed would suit the new one.

Does anyine have a mix they swear by for youngsters? Or, furthermore- a supplement they swear by? I only planned to have him on cod liver oil, but curious to know if anyone also has a favoured supplement for youngies?

Thanks in advance!

I think your plan of Alfa a sounds good; I'd feed it with a good balancer like topspec, and maybe speedi beet as well

ah i see. interesting to hear you use baileys- ive had very mixed opinions thrown at me over baileys, some say dont trust it at all, others say its fantastic. I doubt its neither brilliant or bad, depends on the horse i suppose!

ah, im glad you mentioned this too- i was thinking of that, alfa a with a balancer and a little bit of a condiditioning feed. Though i was also considering saracen equi jewel, that seems promising.
