My tb x wb 16.3 mare is on 675 grams Baileys stud balancer plus 0.5kg dry speedibeet soaked. At moment she ok but coat bit scurfy snd dull and lacking energy bit plus as she working hard in outline in effort to build top line and neck muscle I need protein etc to help add muscle and topline. She has lost weight as weather changed snd coat changed. Linseed poss but trainer suggested not many horses card weight on it and doesn’t taste nice. She won’t eat kgs of feed . Looked at winery condition, pure feeds condition, saracens and lots of them you need to feed 3kg a day which firstly costs fortune and second she won’t eat. Looked at equi jewel or falcon feeds rice bran but don’t want to end up feeding too much protein that it is excreted but she needs enough to build up. Any suggestions???

I'd try the linseed first if I was you. I've had one horse that wouldn't eat it at all, but the rest gobble it up. You can get small tubs of it first to check your horse likes it before you splash out on a huge bag. It has definitely helped with my youngsters weight and coat quality (he is a fine WB).

You could add a small amount of golden syrup to the feed to make it more palatable if she doesn't like the taste of the linseed. That did the trick with mine, and I was able to drop the syrup completely after a few weeks.

I'd change the balancer to something better and then add linseed and salt. if you need more condition after that then rice bran or copra is my go to. I wouldnt waste my time with Copra with anything fussy though!

I just think horses get what they need from forage and grass most of the time, I have supplemented my horses with things if I think they need it but generally they look good on a basic feed of grass chaff, micronised linseed and salt.
