dont have much grass, cant move right now so nothing i can do about that.

need a feed for jayjay which will help him put weight on and not send him loopy which build up mix types do:)

currently fed 4 large stuffed nets per 24 hours, apple chaff/ hi fibre cubes and sugarbeet.

hes in light work, but hes starting to look ribby so want to stop that now.

build up cubes/mix and calm and condition sent him loopy, alpha a/oil does as well.

hes quite fussy, likes apple chaff and show shine but thats about it really, other than fizzs safe and sound

how about.. have just started my boy on baileys number 4 topline, or if you can get it where you are, my friends sware by show mix.

What appears to be working more than anything at the min is sugar beet

was thinking of trying no 4, but want sure if he would blow on that too, hes a pain in the arse to feed lol

my last lad was sharp at the best of times, but a bugger to keep weight on.. i did work him quite hard, and needed him in show condition, i started like you with a high fibre diet, then added the non heating barley nuggurts.

THEN after much expence ( horse was on 3 feeds a day plus hay/haylegde/grass)

i changed to equi jewel. its around 33 quid a bag.

it needs to be supplemented with a balancer or min and vit supplement.

basically i fed., 2 mugs of equi jewel over 2 feeds. with hifi light., and speedi beet, with an added supplement.

id say it took around 4 weeks to see a difference, and around6-7 to be able to cut back to 1 mug a day.

My chestnut mare is difficult to feed, but she is fine on Baileys No 4 despite being a nightmare on other build up cubes/mixes. If you need condition why not supplement with oil as well, build up to a cup a day once they are use to it.

tried oil, was the only thing i changed in his diet, 10 days into adding it he flipped and went galloping around , fell over and cut both knees

If possible swap the hay for haylage, its got more calories in it.

Glad its not just mine that calm and condition sends loopy!! I feed lucy coolstance copra meal. It gives cool energy for weight gain. It dosen't make Lucy loopy and doesn't give her laminitas either. It has helped put condition on her after a hard seasons hunting & got her ready for the show ring. She is nearly 20.

Benji was on Bailey's No.4 all winter along with chaff and speedibeet and was as quiet as a lamb on it. He had a scoop of each twice a day to build him up, with ad lib hay..
He lives out 24/7/365 and came out of winter looking better than he went in.
Benji is a TB type..

insted of hayledge, what about the marksway ryegrass etc?

they have a ton of info about each type of product on their website.

Winergy condition is really good but expensive. Its based on fibre and put a ton of condition on my tb when I trialled it. They recommended him to eat 4kg a day but I would be v lucky to get 3kg in him. I could still see a difference in his condition though on this slightly reduced ration. My tb is on enduro 100,afla a and top spec flakes which he does really well on and doesn't heat up on it either. The other product is le brick again based on fibre but is worth about 4lb of hard feed but because it is all compressed together it takes longer to eat

Baileys no. 4 is exactly the same as their racehorse cubes...

Sent my laid back lad forward

very good though

Try topspec comprehensive supplement or balancer, and their Cool Condition cubes. They dont contain any grains, so dont make them fizzy at all, but are very good for condition

i think its just trial and error, if hel eat show shine put him on that as that has got oil in that will help with condtion and try baileys no4 or topspec cool condtioning cubes etc. just introduce it gradually so it doesnt send him loopy straight away and see what happens. im lucky my tb is prety good to feed

I'd phone some of the feed helplines and ask their opinions. You're giving him ad lib hay which is the essential thing. I would personally feed something like sugarbeet and Top Spec cool conditioning cubes.

Don't think this weather is helping either. A friend of ours has a gelding who has really dropped some serious weight since the rain started a couple of weeks or so ago. He is a bit of a wuss but has definitely been feeling the cold so he's in a LW rug now.

My mare is a poor doer due to being a stress head. She does have haylage which I know you can't use but the best feed for her is simple. Dodson and Horrell's safe and sound and their high fibre/pasture nuts.

I have found that it's not necessarily conditioning feeds that put the weight on but fibre feeds. I also give her Top Spec feed balancer in the winter allthough to be honest, the safe and sound has all the vits and mins she needs.

I hope you find a solution as I know what a nightmare it can be feeding a poor doer.

p.s try cutting out the sugar beet and see if that makes a difference to his temperamnet. It sends my horses over the top energy wise!
