As some may know my pony is currently suffering from fairly bad breathing problems, I have had him allergy tested but am still waiting for the results. Someone suggested I should stop all feed and see if that makes a difference then gradually reintroduce to see if there is a certain feed type that could be causing this. Has anyone had any experience with feeds causing breathing problems? I have come across feeds causing lumps and bumps before but not this. Just wondered if anyone else had really.

well I know that if I eat Cadburys chocolate it affects my asthma so am assuming it could be the same in horses. My mare has a wheat allergy so is now on Simple Systems fed as there is no wheat in their products.

My boy had a few probs a few months ago - he was short of breath and was coughing alot. It turned out he has a bad Lung infection and had loads of mucus trapped in his traceotomy (sorry dont know how to spell that) and lungs he went into the vets and had it all drained out,hes now very sensitive to dust etc, so i have him on Easi-bed instead of straw, has simple system feeds and his hay is soaked overnight.

Hooe this info helps in some way.

Really?? Thank God it doesn't affect mine I don't know what I'd do. Seriously thats really interesting, I just couldn't imagine food having that sort of effect.
I keep looking into Simple Systems but haven't yet managed to take the plunge and order it. What symptoms does your mare show to wheat?

Thank you bensababy. Hope your boy is better now. Patrick is already on soaked hay and shavings which is why I'm struggling a bit. I'm very interested in what the allergy tests say but as usual I'm impatient and can't wait that long. Also its not nice hearing your pony wheeze and cough. I had him scoped and there was no mucus but the trachea was very red and inflamed. Interesting that you have swopped onto Simple System feed as well though, are you happy with it

Yes hes much better now.
I moved onto Simple systems because as hes prone to Lammi hes been on Happy hoof.. he lacked energy and generally didnt look in great condition, and as hes back in work again so i contacted Simple systems and asked for their advise and they suggested these Lucie nuts and beet - ever since he has been on them his energy levels have returned,he looks in great condition and is finally building up some good muscle tone, I really couldnt recommend it highly enough, its all natural products - no rubbish in there.

A friend of mine had her horse allergy tested for a respiratory problem and she was sensitive to various foodstuffs - can't remember which ones they were but I do know she swapped her onto alfafa-based feeds which seemed to work.

She came out in lumps all over her shoulders and sides, they has little heads on them and they drove her mad itching.

Give SS a ring and they can recommend what feed you should get. They are brill and gave me a feeding plan for the winter for my horses.

Thanks TGM -its interesting to know that others have had the same symptoms. Gives me hope that I may be able to sort it out as the steroids he is on don't really seem to be working atm.
