Hi there,

Just wanted a bit of input on this.

Ben was in at night and out at day until this week when he started going out at night, in at day. When stabled he has adlib hay and through the winter had hay in the field too, although the grass is growing now.

Feed wise, he has:

2 scoops hi fi
200g linseed
Vitamin e supplement

Split into two feeds.

He's been looking a bit lean, ordinarily I wouldn't mind, but he is working 6 days a week, if only for short bursts, and I'm focusing on building topline, currently there is not much to convert to muscle though.

He has been on the linseed now for about a month, but I haven't seen any change in weight. I've just wormed him, as he was due and I'm hoping this may make a difference. However, I'm open to suggestions as to what I can do feed wise to build him up... He is 15.3. Can I. Get away with adding another 100g of linseed? I'm debating Alfa oil but he's barefoot and would rather not use alfalfa if possible.

Any suggestions? Up the linseed or add something else?

I personally would up the linseed and maybe add something like a bit of speedibeet

You are already feeding alfalfa as it is in the Hifi (which is a straw and alfalfa blend)!

I would definitely swap the Hifi for something more calorific though. If you don't want alfalfa then unmolassed beet would be a good choice and/or some sort of grass product - grass chaff or soaked grass nuts.

Lol, yes sorry I didn't explain myself well there, I know there is alfalfa in the hi fi, it's just when I popped him on the Alfa oil last time he became footy, so whilst I love Alfa oil, I'm just not sure it's worth it for him.

So. Perhaps another 100g of linseed and some speedie beet or grass nuts, okay then.

Thanks guys :)

Sounds like a plan :) my apparently poor doer tb is on speedibeet hi fi and a handful of hi fibre cubes for interest, is on a pretty bare paddock with ad lib hay and is starting look positively fat! starting to cut he feed down now!

I think some of his problem is that he's grown an inch over the winter, but he's also shifting and changing... Being only four bless him. I by no means want him porky, but I need to add some bulk to convert into muscle. The grass is starting to grow here, I just hope it's enough, we are at a county show in June!

I feel your pain my girl has grown about 2 inches and has been looking more like a Gorky two year old rather than rising 6 year old, shes only started to bulk out these last few weeks so I'm sure Ben won't be far behind. I certainly don't want my girl fat but as you say it's nice to have that bit in reserve that you can work with to build muscle and top line. I'm sure it won't be long before Ben is looking positively handsome and ready for his county show!
