Hi

Looking for suggestions for some hard feed for my horse, he's a 17hh ish Irish Draught Gelding, is worked twice a day to keep his weight down and to try get him fit for summer, mostly schooling, jumping and the occasional hack

He's starting to get picky over his hard feed and hasn't really been eating any of it when i put it in for him, he currently gets 1 scoop of hi fi lite, 1/4 scoop of competition mix and a cup of spillers balancer, and then dampened down with water, I do have speedy beet but at this time of year i do prefer not to have to use it, he gets 2 hay nets while in over night and there's not much grass in the field.

Not sure what to put him on as he has turned his nose up to a lot of different feeds over the years, only really looking to change his chaff ideally, as i think that's what he's not interested in any more.

Any recommendations would be appreciated

If he's a good doer why feed him any hard feed at all, just go with the hay and whatever grass he's getting.

because its not enough for the work that he does, from hay and grass (which we do not have at the moment) it doesn't provide him with enough vitamins and minerals, or enough energy for the work that he is doing.

I feed pure feed. It's chaff and nuts or balancer in one. My fattie is currently on pure balance. I love it as does she and she's very fussy! It is bought online and comes by parcelforce

I changed my girl just over a year ago to Baileys Low Cal Balancer. She gets a total amount of 3 mugs a day, I give her one in Breakfast and Tea, and I put the third in her snack ball to make it last longer over night. This feed has everything that the horse needs and you do not add anything else or need to feed anything else. It really has been the best thing I ever did for her and she is looking really good. Give them a ring they are really very helpful.

You ride him twice a day! Poor horse, what are you going to do once the spring grass is here? My cobs on Allan and page fast fibre and hoof kind chaff which keeps his weight down but still gives him the vitamins he needs.

Couldn't you just cut out the chaff then? If he's not that interested then presumably isn't going to bolt hard feed and is getting plenty of forage already.

Don't be daft, there's nothing wrong with working a horse twice a day!

I do have issues with feeding a horse you're struggling to keep weight off, however. I would simply feed fibre plus a balancer until he won't keep weight on with that combo. If he doesn't have enough energy it suggests to me that he needs to be fitter, rather than fed more.

Just out of interest, if he's a good doer and you are having to work him hard to get weight off him why is he on competition mix?
