My horse has had colic 3 times now (vet thinks the last two times may be sand colic as there's a lot of sand mixed in the grazing) and had laminitis as a side effect of the first bout.

He isn't the 'traditional' lami type - a 16.2hh Irish Sports Horse.

Currently he's on a scoop of D&H Safe and Sound and 1/2 scoop of Alfabeet mixed with water twice daily. He gets a wedge of hay in morning and 4/5 wedges at night in a net. He's very greedy so don't think ad-lib hay would work as he just wouldn't stop.

I have some Pink Powder which I will be adding (1 scoop morning and evening) to help his gut. I will also be adding some Feel Good 30 garlic, parsley and linseed oil supplement.

I am on a tight budget, but was looking for some cheaper alternatives and ideas on what to feed him to help reduce the risk of him getting either again.

He is on very limited grazing with no possiblity of changing fields.

Personally I would cut out all your suppliments apart from the Pink Powder, the Safe ans Sound should be good enough, nutrition wise for your garlic at least. Have you tried phoning the feed companies and asking their advice?

Pink Powder is a good basic gut supplement, or NAF also do Synbiozyme which you could look into (though you may need to order it).

I have started my mare on Coligone from H Bradshaw, specifically to prevent her occasional spasmodic gas colic attacks.

I'd like to try the coligone but at £50 a month I can't afford it at the moment

So sorry to hear about your horse having colic 3 times. Have you thought of an holistic approach with approval from your vet? Hope you find something that stops him/her getting colic again. Good luck

It's good that you are feeding him a high fibre diet, this is good for both the colic and the laminitis.

TBH if you are feeding Pink Powder, this is not just for gut function, but has good levels of vits/mins too, so you do not need to feed the Feel Good 30, this should save you some money.

I've already bought the Oil so he will get that to use it up

Will see if it warrants buying any more!

I'm going to add some HiFi Lite too as it will make the S&S go further and he's done well on it before.

Anyone got any idea of feed quantities? He's 16.2hh, worked at least 3x a week.
Was thinking 1/2 scoop s&s, 1 scoop hifi lite, 1/2 scoop alfabeet, pink powder and oil - twice a day.
Will that be enough along with his hay?
