Feed storage

I'm very contrary as I don't feed the yard-provided feed. After one of the ponies (not mine) got loose in the middle of the night last week, and destroyed my bag of chaff (spreading it *all* over the barn floor), and tipping over my feed bins, mixing hay cobs, muesli and sugarbeet together *all* over the barn floor.

My YO asked me to keep feed stored in a locker as it is too "dangerous" to have out.

My current feed bins are these ones from IKEA http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...aste-sorting-bin-with-lid-white-art-10255897/

I've been using the two bigger ones, which are fab, as they are stackable, and will hold a full 20kg bag of food. I've had then stacked to one side of my allocated locker for the best part of 2 years with only a couple of mishaps.

Our yard-provided lockers have fixed saddle racks, and there isn't any room to store a bale of chaff.

Does anyone have any ideas for feed storage, which is steady, secure, potentially lockable, and is less than 50cm wide, but would hold either a full standard bale of chaff and/or a 20kg bag of food?

Thanks. :)

Could you drill holes in the rims of your current bins and clip a leadrope clip through them so the lids can't be lifted off by an escaped pony? (I guess you'd need several clips per bin)
Would the YO accept this?

How about some galvanised dustbins with lids that have loops which fasten down over the bin handles. I bought two of these for the chicken feed. Bought them on eBay, £30 for 2. Good as they are rodent proof too.

Can you get a whole bag in those ikea ones Casey? I've got a small space to store feed too.
Yes, the bigger ones - A full bag (15kg) of Agrobs Muesli or (25kg) hay cobs

You do need a smallish scoop to get in the gap of the lift-up part of the lid. I use an Agrobs rectangular scoop, and it works a treat.

I'm going to discuss with my YO about one of those galvanised partitioned bins. It might fit alongside my locker

Thanks :)

keep it at home. make up a week or 2 weeks mix and store in plastic bags, have a container for s beet and soak at home, put on lid and take in car,or store made up feeds in small bags in locker available at yard.

We use an old very large chest freezer. Not sure how to lock it though as never thought about it. Great for stopping the rats from eating the food (they have chewed through plastic dustbins before)
