As per post, I have two border x terriers, one three, one four, in good health, very active, and great boys.
One has verrrry sensitive skin, always has done (we rescued him from a bad start in life, at 6 months when we got him he'd only ever eaten fry ups and sandwiches), and the other one has a delicate tummy, anything rich just comes out at a rate of knots lol.
Theyve been on naturediet and then james wellbeloved sensitive for a while now, and Im keen to give them something else. They often have chicken, rice, pasta as treat meals, and have salmon oil supplements daily. Theres nothing particularly wrong with them but (and it could just be the time of year) they just seem to be lacking their sparkle. Yes they're wormed, etc etc religeously, infact every time my vet sees them she asks if id like to leave them with her lol. They recommend Hills Science Diet but my two do love more 'tasty' food so its just finding a balance.
What do you find works well with your small breed? x

Hills science diet is just Cra*p im sorry, i wouldnt feed that if it was the last thing on earth

Have you thought about feeding raw?? My boxer Alfie is fed raw and his coat looks wonderful. Its ideal for dogs with bad skin and dikky tummies as most processed foods contain grains and additives which can cause these symptoms. Raw doesnt contain any of these as it just natural food. If you are considering raw you need to do some research to ensure you feed a balanced diet but its not hard to learn. Im a convert i must admit!

We have a Border and after trying loads of different (dried) food and him refusing to eat it we were recommended Chappie tinned meat and he absolutly loves it

, he looks really well on it and his poo's are solid ( vets recommend Chappie for sensetive tummies so it may be worth a try) , Ted has 1 tin a day split into two meals

Chappie is probably the worst tinned food to feed. It has so much crap in it and alot of ingredents that alot of dogs are allergic to.
Echo above raw really is great for sensitive skin and tummys.

My terrier loves Applaws chicken fillet or the chicken and veg it looks like you could put it with pasta and eat it yourself!! it has carrots peas pumkin ham chicken and rice, she has 2 tins mixed with a bit of mixer.
Ive just reaslised at 98p per tin and 2 a day at £1.96 per day it costs more to feed her a month than my 2 horses!!

no wonder im poor lol but she likes it....

Yes, it's probebly not THE best food but like I said vets do recommend it and many people (including breeders and showing people) on the border forum feed it , when Ted was on dried food his poo's were runny and he scratched constantly thats stopped now , he was loosing weight ,looked misereble and it upset me that he was like this, he looks fab now and is happy and healthy and all we changed was his food , prehaps raw is good but there have been cases of salmonella poisoning ect in dogs on the BT forum so that put me off feeding it .

My terriers are sensitive and they have been great since I started feeding James Wellbeloved about 6 years ago, I always said I would never feed a dry food but am a complete covert now, however they do have about a teaspoon of tinned dog meat with it as one is also fussy and won't eat without it!

Hi, Have you tryed any other dried food? I would love to feed my dogs and cat a natural diet but with a hectic lifestyle i just cant bt get as much as they can natural. I feed all mine arden grange and have found fantastic results that has worked for MY animals. Take a look at their homepage quite impressive and as natural as it can be. I changed as my dog was fed royal canin and got very itchy and over hyper for a collie. With this food she is in show condition all year round, doesnt 'blow' her coat as much and sparkles so does the kitty!

Pasta has wheat in it, and with the JWB and Nature diet you are feeding a wheat free diet, so I wouldn't give pasta. Chappie isn't great, was looking at the ingredients earlier today as a customer had been recommended it by the vet. It has 4% fish and (I think) 4% chicken. A 10kg dog is recommended to have two tins a day, which means £1.10 a day to feed a small dog! Do bear in mind that whilst vets are great, they very often aren't trained a lot in nutrition.

If I had your two dogs, I woud feed them a good quality complete food, such as JWB (so-so) Burns, Oscar, Arden Grange (all good foods), cut out all treats for at least a fortnight, and see how they are then. If you want to see if a dog food is good, look at the ingredients. The bigger the name (think of the adverts you see a lot) generally the worse the food. If a dog food advertised that is 'with chicken and beef', for instance' it must contain a minimum of 4% chicken and 4% beef. Shockingly, this is exactly how much some of the low quality foods do contain, also check out the E numbers (you only have to look at the pictures of the food!), the feeding rate, and the vitamin level. Vitamin A is a good guideline to look at, I think (but don't quote me!) Burns has about 10,000 iu, Oscar has 15,000iu, and one can of Chappie has 500iu - no I haven't missed off a 0, it really is 500!

For wet food, Nature Diet is good, as is Natures Harvest which also has added glucosamine, is the same price and gluten free. Burns now do tinned dog food (not seen the ingredients) JWB do pouches, they are extortionate in price, some Butchers tins are good, again wheat gluten free, but however you look at it, with 'wet' food you are paying for water. Whether it is tinner or pouches, the average 'moisture' contact is 80%, which is why you have to feed so much, and why dry food is a cheaper option (and better for their teeth!)

Sorry to have ranted on a bit, we deal with queries like your every day in the shop, and I've come up against Chappie today big time! PM me if you want further info!

My rescue rottie has been doing very well on supadog sensitive, as recommended by someone on here. We tried Burns for a bit (2 different flavours), but he didn't really like it. Poo is nice & firm & he has plenty of energy, but isn't hyper.
