Baby horse, Jay, is coming back from his winter holiday this weekend.

He is 3/4 TB and is 3 yrs old. He will be 4 yrs old in June.

He was backed last July and lightly schooled and hacked until the end of september when he went away to the winter field. At the time he was living out 24/7 and just eating grass.

So, since Oct he has just had grass and latterly some hay too.

when he comes back this weekend he will be in with approx 3 hrs turnout a day and we will be re-starting him. He will get ad lib haylage.

But what feed should he have? I was thinking of just giving him high fibre nuts and possibly some readigrass?

He will not be out on the summer paddocks and good grass til about the middle of April.

thanking you in advance for your wise help!

High fibre nuts and readigrass sound good :). I'd add in a mineral suppliment as well. If he drops weight, micronised linseed is good.

Is he a goos doer generally?
If so i'd just stay with the ad-lib haylage and see how he goes, you may not need any hard feed, especially restarting a youngster.
Less sugar the better to eliminate any unnecessary sillyness :)

Local feed store have recommended Fast Fibre. i have read up on it and it appears to be more or less a hay replacer. they have given me a few packets of free samples to try.

As he will be getting good quality haylage is this the right thing to feed? i am tempted to see how he goes on the and a scoop of nuts at night time. If we are re starting him I dont think I will be wanting him to be too full of beans!
