My old mare is on the Winergy feed trial and loves the food.
She is 26 years old and has had health problems. So much so each winter i expect to be her last.
In her younger days she was a madam. So much so i was advised to have her shot

She just needed understanding

She has been a saint the past few years bless her.
Yesterday i was just getting the feeds ready.
Well she couldn't wait for her hers. She barged the gate and it fell flew off. She broke the hinges off the post and left it lying on the ground whilst she darted out to eat her dinner.
She is a thoroughbred/native takeing after her dad a racehorse so not stocky or anything.
She realy meant it and did it

My daughter had told her off for being bargy at the gate and told her to wait so she just circled round and charged

She acts a decrepid old crone in the field. There is a way of telling her off. You ask her to behave not tell as my daughter did.
I haven't seen her behave like that in all her life. Always a madam but never bargy. Totally shocked.
What do they put in that feed? something addictive.
The rest of the monsters also escaped. It was a free for all.
I need a plan of action for today. It has been nice haveing a quiet old bag, i don't think i can cope with the old one now i am older

Its not the food makeing her hyper but the fact she finds it iresistable

Our ex-racehorse also on the trial was a saint bless her just kept on eating quietly ignoreing the mob and she was supposed to be a looney

Suit of armer and a lance today for the old bag

I was recommended by Spillers to put our 19 year old mare on the Winergy Grow & win?? to give her the nutrients that she needs without becoming fizzy.

Anyway we are almost, thankfully at the end of the 2nd bag and I can't wait to switch her back to boring old nuts! She has turned into the most boucy food led thing that you could imagine and at feeding time she is impatient & noisy- something that has become signifcantly worse since we changed her food!

So my question is the same as yours, what is it that they put in it that is so addictive??

I had an ex racer that needed condition through the winter and a youngster in work that needed muscled up but will not eat alot ie. she will eat a 1/3rd of the recommended amount on the bag if lucky! I tried winergy and they would'nt go near it! even my miniature niknamed the bin or lawnmower kicked her bucket until it was empty, so it's interesting how yours are the opposite.

LOL! There's yeast in it....my cats go mad for yeast, maybe it's that. I really hope it doesn't give them 'fizz' as I just started my 4 yo Haflinger on it yesterday.

Quick Q, are you feeding it straight or mixed with something? She's been on a Pegasus economy mix(made by Spillers too) and I'm reducing it while increasing the trial feed. Do you think I should stop the Pegasus feed all together in case it interferes? Plus, how long does feed last in a bin?

ETA My Haffie ate it all yesterday, but didn't clean the bowl like she does in winter...

My mare isn't overly keen. She normally bangs the door for her food and has been eating her hay rather than her hard feed since she has been on this.

My 3yr old is eating it - but taking forever and the big girl is eating half then deciding she's bored and finishing it sometime later - that's working out fine cos they come in at night and I don't turn out till lunchtime at the moment but it would be driving me crazy if I was trying to turn out first thing and had to wait for them - my mornings are early enough.....

Mine now bucks and rears on the yard when she sees her feed being made up. Before we only got that sort of reaction if she saw the trailer pulling in and thought she was going somewhere fun!

I'm chuffed though, shes so picky normally she used to play with her food for hours and chuck half of it round her stable, now she licks the bucket out and hoovers it all up off the floor

We feed our oldies on Allen & Page Old Faithful in the winter, they seem to love it (though doesn't make them crazy!) and it keeps them really well over the winter months. It smells yummy too! Never tried Winergy, my older pony can get tubby in summer and hold weight all year - we once tried him on a low calorie mix, well he wouldn't touch it! Think he was disgusted, he does has rather a sweet tooth! hehe. Funny animals arent they, you gotta love 'em!

I also gradually reduced her other feed, just incase

The mix of feeds hasn't made her naughty just impatience as she likes it so much.
I would personally carry on reduceing the mix and increasing the winergy so its not a shock to the system.
Many horses are fine but you never know.
I have two on it so use it from the bag. I don't know how long it would last in a bin. I keep all my feeds in bags unless opening 1 new one and put it in the bin as i find it stays fresher.
I did not realise it had yeast in it, i must read closer

The ex-racehorse is getting a stunning shiny coat on it. She is the same as always. She wasn't sure about it to start with but licks her bucket clean now.
If they have lots of good grass they may not feel so hungry.
I've ordered a bag of senior for another old fogey. He looks well but being older and haveing had a hard life before he came to us i like to give them something a bit extra to keep them going.
P.S. I love the old croney realy.

just been chased down by a sheep and her lamb when I was walking across the field with the feed!!!! I emptied it into Merel's bucket(she has to have a big plastic bucket stuck into a tyre to stop her spreading it round the field) then put the carrying bucket outside the fence and the sheep licked it!!! Merel also became V protective over her feed!! There must be something in that feed!!
