I have another feed question. My horse is in livery with no winter turnout. I have changed his feed since he has been back in 24/7 so as to give him maximum fibre.
Could all you feed experts tell me if it is ok or am I giving too much?
My horse weighs around 550 kg for approx 16'2HH . He has more of a tendancy to drop weight and has never been a good doer.
He is in medium work (6 days a week) dressage and hacking.

I am feeding him daily:
4-5 kg of haylage
3-4 kg of hay (provided by stable owners).
1 kg of alpha A oil
1.3 kg of mix (provided by stable owners)

Thanks,
Johanna

the mix is the only unknown item in this, as we don't know the protein/carb/fibre ratios in it. For this reason I prefer to feed straights where possible.
If it is a 'cool' mix your horse might need more energy, although the alfa-oil will provide some of this.
I would add some speedibeet for extra fibre and to make the meals more interesting for him..but that is just my preference

Not very good on converting weight and only work in lbs, so may have this completely wrong, but by my reconning he is getting about 14-18lbs of hay/haylage over a 24hrs period. That sounds a bit light to me for a 16.2hh, I would be inclinded to up the hay a bit, you could even give him ab lib hay. My girl scoffs about 12-14lbs of hay over nigh & goes out all day.
