hi there, What do you feed your horses on. It's just I'm finding my 6 yr old mare a little sluggish now that i'm working her a lot more for competions...any tips may be what to put her on, at the moment she is on. speedy beet (sugar beat) with alan & page calm and condition (may b I should remove that one as now she working she not a fizzy thing, like she used to be!) also on healthy hooves chaff (nice mix with yummy things in) and baileys number 4 conditioning cubes (keep weight on-good stuff), Any help would be good. she is a t/b and looks good at the moment not a skinny t/b.

I suppose it depends how much more energy she needs?-One of my horses is on Spillers Competition Slow Release energy cubes, as when he's in more work/shows he needs a bit more lasting energy- These seem to have worked really well. I think they also make Instant energy cubes as well, although to be honest I think most feed manufacturers will make something similar. We also feed Alfalfa as it provides Slow Release energy. I have friend who have used Balanced Show mix which they say has been very good.

I have started feeding Allen & Page's Sustain which is a slow release energy food, especially for dressage and endurance horses.

I dosn't make them fizzy, but seems to do what it says on the bag!

Spillers readigrass - thats all i feed my event horse and it has him happy - has the same amount of energy in it as a competition feed but without any of the cereals and mollasses. Really good stuff, completey transformed him. I feed him that with a multi vit supplement.

Could try introducing small amount of competition mix, the oats in that should give her an extra bit of oomph and increase it as she starts competing more

I feed winergy equilibrium. they are fantastic, all my horses look amazing, are really calm and well behaved and have plent of stamina without being silly.

They are really helpful and if they don't have a feed to suit your horse they do recommend what they think would be good from another supplier.

Maybe you should call them?

If you want to feed 'complete feeds' then I would suggest you stick to one, rather than mixing them. So choose Calm and Condition OR Bailey's No 4 OR another complete feed of your choice and feed that alone - you can add chaff/beet although you don't need to. Check whether you are feeding the recommended daily amount of the feed - as these feeds are supplemented with vit/mins if you feed significantly less than the manufacturer recommends then you will only be feeding a fraction of the vit/mins. You can make up for this by feeding a vit/min supplement pro rata - ie if you feed half the RDA of a complete feed, then you would feed half the daily dosage of a vit/min supplement to compensate.

The other alternative is to feed an unsupplemented feed like the Readigrass that K&R suggested, together with a vit/min supplement. The advantage of that approach is that it is easy to adjust the amount of Readigrass needed to the condition of the horse without having to worry about the supplementation because that is catered for separately.

Well to be really picky (cos I'm just in that kind of mood today

) they do actually get paid for the work they do (even if not by you) - but it is nice to know they went the extra mile for you!

What a nightmare, indeed! My friend has a similar type horse and about the only bucket feed she can give it is alfafa!
