feeding 3 year old maxi cob

sorry
out at 6am in at 6pm on good grass, half bale of hay at night more if its all gone, he is not doing anything at the min as just come over from ireland and hasnt had anything done. he is 16.1 and i got him for showing.
thanks x

I have a 3 yo maxi cob type, and he is currently out 24/7, and just getting a token chaff and carrot feed.
Once the weather gets colder, he'll start having 2 mugs of D&H Suregrow and chaff. Just to get his vits and mins in.
He usually has a paddock mineral bucket too.

For now i would just feed a chaff like Happy Hoof or Healthy Hooves as they have vits and mins added without the sugars and fibre nuts. See what he's like in to the winter when the grass has gone.
However the above (2 mugs of D&H Suregrow and chaff) also sounds a good suggestion.

Both Spillers and Dengie have free feed advice phone lines you can call and have a chat with a nutritionist :)

I'd keep him on the grass and hay he is on at the moment, and probably just give a balancer (like the Suregrow suggested) to provide protein and vit/mins. I'd only add extra feed if he needed more condition.

The idea with balancers is that the vit/mins are very concentrated in a small amount of feed. If you choose instead to feed a supplemented chaff type feed such as the Happy Hoof suggested above, you will need to feed a larger volume of feed to get the same amount of vit/mins - check with the manufacturer for the recommended amount for a horse of that size.

Must be something in the air as i`ve just bought a 3 yr old (slightly overweight) cob too!

He too is out daytimes on goodish grass and not in work as he was broken earlier in the year, had a bit of a rough time so has been 'turned away' to grow up for a bit.

I`m feeding mine on ad-lib hay/oatstraw mix in the stable and feed him a scoop of light chaff, a mug of lo-cal and a scoop of Fast Fibre. This way he is getting a big dinner/lots of forage to satisfy his huge appetite and all his vits & mins but with minimum calorific intake!
