Hi all,

I am going to be getting my new horse next weekend he is a 3 yr old maesmynach section D.

He has lived out all his life and lived off fresh air and he's looking pretty good! However unfortunately in my area 24/7 winter turnout is rare and not available on my yard so although he will get daily turnout he will also be stabled with ad lib haylage.

My plan is to do a bit in hand with him over winter looking to start doing more in the summer. My question is should I feed him a hard feed and if so what should it be? I had a tb before and he was fed baileys no4 and show shine cherry chaf as he was fussy and he loved that! He always did well on it weight wise.

I want to keep my new one barefoot but don't know much about it so I'm looking into that but obviously I know it will affect the feed that he can have.

Pictures will be posted when he is home I'm very excited but just want everything to be perfect for him!

Thankyou in advance!

Congratulations, very exciting :)

If he is looking well then there is no need to give any hard feed tbh. If you plan to keep him barefoot then I personally would avoid mixes/sugar etc and when you eventually give him bucket food keep it as simple as possible.

I favour grass nuts, more for something to put supplements in, and micronised linseed if they need it.

Looking forward to some pictures :)

Perfect, thankyou both of you. That's what I was thinking, just giving him the tiniest token bit when he comes in to get him used to the idea so thankyou for backing that up!

Although not my first horse he will be my first youngster so I'm sure there will be more silly questions to follow!
