feeding a bitch with pups

I have a 3 stone working bassett that has just had (4 days ago) 8 healthy and large pups. Pre pregnancy she was normally fed one coffee cup of bakers dry feed a day. Shes now on three coffee cups of bakers puppy feed. Shes always been a good doer and I think would eat herself to death but she seems really hungry, which you would do breastfeeding 8 piglets ! Should I increase it more or can you still over feed mums ?
 
Well firstly I would wean her off Bakers - awful stuff. Sorry!

My JRT bitch had as much James Wellbeloved puppy as she could eat. she almost maintained her normal weight through feeding her pups and looked great at the end. I wouldnt feed bakers either btw
 
It agrees with my two and all the pups looked great. never had a problem on it so wont change atm. Not exp for just two JRTs but might be different if i had loads of bigger dogs lol
 
I always fed my bitches several feeds a day of higher protein food than normal, and agree would not feed Bakers but rather one of the better feeds. Just use your eye to monitor her weight, if you think she is losing a bit of weight increase the feed, if she is looking fat reduce it. Be prepared to reduce her food once you start weaning the pups though or then she will put on weight, and you may also have trouble drying up her milk.
 
Thanks guys, will try and bring back the two tons of bakers I bought today at scats ! I guess I ll have to introduce the new food in gradually.

I'm with you Pups! Nothing good in that for a dog let alone a lactating bitch.
