I would be really grateful for any advice on feeding my 5 years old Warmblood X mare. OCD in her stifle has been found on xrays and she's on box rest until she has an operation and possibly for 3 months after.

She has been on box rest for 2 weeks so far and I have kept her calm by just feeding hay, graze on, alpha and a bit of speedy beet with supplements.

I know OCD is feed and growth related and she's still growing. The vet didn't seem to have any suggestions although the surgeon from Liverpool doing the operation may leave instructions after the op.

I wondered about something from Simple Systems but dont want to make things worse.

Does anyone have any experience please

I feed Baileys and they offer a free nutrion advice service. I would suggest that you phone them and speak to one of their nutrionalists about your situation. They may even give you the number of someone in your area who can come out and see the horse in the flesh. you will be under no obligation to use their feeds and as I said earlier the service is free.

I changed to Simple Systems because of a skin condition in one of mine and have not looked back. The same horse (17hh TB) has had box rest for both a hock kick (very bad) and then since January stifle debridement for OCD.(which incidentally went really well however the previous kick is causing a problem!!!)
I also have a WB/TB/Irish big boy who takes some feeding so at the moment he is getting SS with an addition of non mollased beet with some D & H build up as he is in work and needs to fill out ..once he has done so I will feed only SS.
Im on Luciebix at the moment but have got some of their endurance pellets which I have not yet started.
I have always been worried by the thought of ulcers when feeding so am now not concerned with SS.
Best of luck with the Op it will be OK (would be riding mine now if it wasnt for the previous kick injury!! ).

Thank you

I will ring both tomorrow.

Its good to hear of a succesful outcome, I must admit I'd never heard of it until the vet told me what the problem was.
