My barefoot tb had a digital pulse tonight after a few days of being footy so thinking I am dealing with a lami attack of some description. What are my feeding options ? he has been on his new diet for 5 months now so am thinking its either the hay or grass that has caused it - he is a large horse who drops weight and muscle easily and errs on the side of lazy so needs the energy as well - bit of a conundrum

It sounds to me like his hindgut is not functioning as well as it should be, thus the additional sugar has had an adverse affect on him. Have a read of this: http://www.littleoasisequine.com/uploads/2/1/7/6/21760604/fact_sheet_hindgut_acidosis.pdf

I would take him off grass for a couple of days as an emergency measure, also get him on a good pre/probiotic (I would personally give Protexin Quick Fix followed by some of their Gut Balancer, they do a good starter pack with one of each) to help re-populate his hindgut with good bacteria, and also possibly consider a hindgut buffer such as Equishure. If he improves off the grass then look at reintroducing it slowly while monitoring, but I think the key will be getting his hindgut working well for him.

It will be laminitis, rethink your feed, less sugar, soak hay and keep off the grass...when he is ound, you may have to strip graze or muzzle him...PLenty of hay but soaked and micronised linseed, will help hooves and put weight on..
