Hi everyone!

I am trying to create a feeding plan for a 10-year-old thoroughbred,500kg 16hh who has gastric ulcers that are being treated with omeprazole.
I know he needs a low sugar low starch diet, but im at a bit of a loss with what to feed. He is a new horse and his previous diet is unknown. He is in light work.

If you could let me know what you would feed, how much AND why. That would be brilliant and so so very appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance x

Aloe Vera juice 25ml a day, costs about £8 a litre, proven to work on ulcers, but not to be used until you've finished the omeprazole.

Is your horse also on sucralfate? It's known now that omeprazole alone has a nasty habit of causing issues with the hind gut, so sucralfate used as well is the gold standard treatment.

He was also on oats for a long time but I’ve dropped them this week and haven’t noticed a drop in his energy. Think he’s more forward now he’s more comfortable- hopefully.

I feed mine Thunderbrooks herbal chaff, pink mash and grass nuts.
For supplements he’s currently on Ron Fields powder and Ulcex30.
This is pretty much what I feed my ID mare that had stage 2-3 ulcers. It seems to agree with her and she is extremely fussy to feed so it was hard to get her to eat anything at one stage. The vet gave us a hind gut supplement called Rite Track which is excellent but of course she would not eat one tiny bit of it
