27 year old Ellie is still not putting on as much weight as I would like. She is better than she was but still a bit ribby.

At the moment she is on two feeds a day of one large scoop of Alpha A Oil and one scoop of Quickbeet. She is having this twice a day. She is out 24/7 on plenty of grass although it is long 'old' grass so probably isn't the most nutritious.

She has a lovely shiny coat, great hooves and has no health problems at all. She is in light work - a couple of hours hacking two or three times a week.

What can I give her to help her put on weight?

We have just had this with the oldie here - he is 35!! - and he just wasn't putting on enough weight. We have tweaked his diet a bit - and have put him on Mollichaff Veteran hay replacer. You could try swapping the alpha oil for it - oldies sometimes find it hard to process the protein in alfalfa efficiently. The Mollichaff Veteran has linseed oil and all sorts of yummy stuff - look on their website - he also gets some speedibeet and veteran mix.

It gets difficult as they get older as everything slows down and they get fussier! - but it is really important that they get lots of fibre - so our oldie gets a trug of the Mollichaff Veteran in his field all the time and it just gets topped up as and when needed as well as his two meals a day!!

We used TopSpec Super Conditioning Flakes alongside Topspec balancer to great effect to put weight on my OH's skinny TB - he is a bit younger at 17, but he really was skinny.

i have a 35 yr old mare who is fed twice a day on 1 scoop of veteran mollichaff and a scoop of spillers senior condition mix and has water added or suger beet during the winter she also has hay ( as much as she wants) and on nutritious grass.

my friend has just put her 20 yr old mare on a feed by badminton its a new range of feed and she noticed the difference in just two weeks! www.badmintonfeeds.co.uk
its the conditioning nuggets. : )
