Welsh section D, currently on two scoops of Dodson and Horrel Foal mix and two scoops of Alfa A split into 3 feeds,(kept him on the same rations as he was on when I bought him) currently ad lib hay at night (he is in, but doesn't eat much) grass during the day.. will be out fully end of May (waiting for his hormones to die down after gelding

Would like to change his feed to one more suitable for his age.. like a bit more condition.. what would you feed?

As a yearling he shouldn't be carrying any extra condition. I would personally move him onto D&H Suregrow at the appropriate levels (phone their helpline, they are very helpful) and then if he starts to lose weight you can up the chaff or add some horse and pony nuts to add a bit of condition but he really shouldn't carry ant excess weight. Hope this helps

I would reduce/remove the Alfa A and reduce the Mix gradually before he goes out 24/7,its too much protein/sugars and if necessary feed him Hi-Fi lite/Good DoER with the mix over the summer if the grazing is not that good. if he is anything like our section B he will explode when he hits the grass,i always change my feed management well in advance, all mine lives out 24/7 and they all started on HI-Fi Lite weeks ago and the welsh has had no hard feed for a week and she is already fat.
People tend to over feed the native ponies(not saying that you are),our pony gets Hi-Fi all year round, apart from the summer months together with fibre beet and she lives out 24/7 with a sheet in the winter for rain/winter protection .Natives are tough ponies

My yearling new forest is on a scoop of Hi Fi Lite and 800g - 1kg of D&H Suregrow a day. He is a very good doer but doing well on this and he is out 24/7 on fair grazing. I personally would be making sure he maintains correct weight, excess weight is a big no no on youngsters, especially natives. I'm sure once he gets on some good grazing he'll be fine

. Just make he's getting enough protein, vit & minerals, that's most important.

It would probably be worth speaking to your feed company of choice as they all have nutritionists, I use D&H mare and foal mix on all of my youngsters till they are 3 along with a good quality supplement as you need to make sure they get the right vits & mins.
