Hi All. My elderly dads cat got very constipated yesterday and got so distressed I took him to the vets which is where he still is now. It is looking like his kidneys are giving up the ghost so we know that the inevitable will happen but Dad wants to make sure Charlie has the best quality of life for his last few months or so. The vet is already making noises about " special diets" which just flashes the pound signs up for me. I've done a little research and it says to feed a wet high protein human grade food and I just wondered what that would be. Dad wont be up for cooking home foods so does anyone have any experience of this and what did you feed your cat when diagnosed with this. Thanks all. :)

Specialised diets for cat health problems are specifically designed and researched just for that - cats. They are more expensive than ordinary cat food as there has been a lot of research into them, e.g. Hills kidney pouches might be 1 1/2 times the cost of normal pouches but then they do enhance the quality of life of the cat. You might be able to shop around for a bulk online deal (there are also other veterinary diet brands available too e.g. Eukanuba renal failure diet for cats - another excellent highly researched brand).
I think that if your dad isn't up to cooking home made foods (which you would need to balance for optimal kidney function - remember that they aren't working as they should and that cats are not the same as humans) then it is really the only way to go to achieve this.
Up to you, but i worked for years as a vet nurse and saw these sorts of diets help tremendously and I am normally a great cynic.

Agree with above. A diet suitable for a cat in renal failure needs to be restricted in phosphorus, and low quantity of protein but high quality.
