I am going to be loaning a 21 yrs young mare soon, will be DIYing her with assistance, and trying to plan/cost her feed. Am told she's an average doer and will be in light work. I want to give her everything she needs but not pay over the odds.

Due to hay currently costing £6.25/small bale from my yard, and knowing she is used to haylage, I'm wondering if it would be more/less expensive to feed her small bale haylage?

In the bucket, she apparently used to be on simple systems feeds in addition to haylage, but I'm not sure how convenient the soaking ahead/long feeding times are going to be - particularly if I am getting the yard staff to turn her out on the days I can't do her. If her breakfast takes hours to eat then they're going to have to part her from it to turn her out!?

Is there another way of feeding everything unmolassed and having only a short soak time just before you feed the horse? Plus normal length of time to eat, so as to fit in with the rest of the yard?

Any thoughts (especially timings/costings) would be greatly appreciated - she's 14.1 arab if that helps. thanks
