I've had my mare for 4 months and since she has been with us she has been fed Dengie unmolasssed hifi, purabeet and hi fibre cubes. She has a picky appetite at best and she has started turning her nose up at her feed and eating a little bit but doesn't seem that interested.

I spoke to the vet last night about the possibility of ulcers and what symptoms she may have. I have started her on a bespoke Hack Up supplement (started on Friday) which is both a calmer and a digestive supplement. Her droppings are already looking like normal horse poo which is a real bonus and she seems less anxious. So we are going to wait and see how this supplement does for a couple of weeks and if there isn't a huge real improvement, she will be scoped.

I thought I'd do an experiment this morning and soaked some Calm & Condition and went to see her in the field where she had left her breakfast in its bowl. She dived straight in and went mad for it. Then I walked away with the bucket and she chased me down the field. I put the rest of the C&C in her breakfast bowl and she ate the lot.

She came having been on a high sugar diet for her entire life - she is now 14. Could it just be that the feed I was giving her is too bland and I might have to have a rethink about what to feed her? I used to feed my old horse C&C and oats and that was perfect for him to hunt all season on. He ate every scrap. I'd rather she ate all her food with the supplements in.

Horse gets Pro Hoof and her new supplement as well as linseed and extra salt. I want her to eat these extras because its a total waste of money otherwise!!

Can anyone suggest anything that is low sugar/starch that a fussy eater will eat? She keeps her condition very well and is out 24 hours a day at the moment although will come in at night at the end of October.

Sorry so long!!!

I used calm and condition for a slightly picky horse that had signs of ulcers although he scoped just about clear, he loved it, did well on it without gaining weight as he was in fairly hard work, I added alfalfa if he required a bit more when he was eventing, he remained more stable in his condition than when he was on his former diet of mix and like yours he would not eat a low sugar high fibre feed, I felt that calm and condition was a happy medium and the fact he looked and felt well on it was enough proof that it was suitable.

Fingers crossed that she continues to eat it with as much vigour as she did this morning and that it doesn't send her nuts!!

Mine continued to lick his bowl clean every meal, which he never had before despite starting off diving in as if he was starving he always left just a bit until he went onto this feed, it didn't send him nutty either and he was a fairly high energy type so it could have.
