Hi, well we are collecting our new youngster today, he will be 3 in June. We have never had one so young before and would like advice as to what is the best feed. He has been living out, could do with some condition. He will continue to live out when he comes to us today. We are hoping to get out and about doing inhand classes with him over the coming months. He is a TB cross.
Any advice would be great.

I would use alfa-a oil, sugar beet, good hay or haylage.

I honestly wouldn't want to use any mixes. You have to let them mature at their own speed. The only thing I used that really helped bring condition and shine was blue chip. It was expensive, but lasted and made a huge difference to my horse.

Good luck.

Lacking condition could be due to a growth spurt.

Make sure he is wormed and is teeth have been done, otherwise good grazing and a handful of Baileys' Lo-Cal for the condition and vit & mins missing in the grazing. He'll start to come on fine then.
Once he turns four and is working then feed as an adult horse.

I feed mine (17hh 3yo) Add lib hay, handful hi-fi lite, and speedi beet with a vit and min supp added (something like equivite). You can always add a good dolop of oil to this to help with the weight.

I wouldnt feed too much alfaalfa as it is relatively high in protein and can send some off their rockers!! start with something plain and build up from there..

echo the advice about worming well and getting teeth done too.

Don't forget the grass will be coming through VERY soonso will help with the weight...

Thanks for the advice, I am definitely going to take the less is more approach! Currently having ad lib haylage, will see if he continues to be sane and if he does will then look at introducing something simple!
I think he probably has had a growth spurt so will wait and see how he goes over the next few weeks, I have wormed him and was planning on getting his teeth loooked at but was told that a dentist won't look at him until he is approx 3 and a half, is this not the case?
Thanks again :)
