Hi guys I have a 9Yo TB mare on medium work, she is out for a few hours a day but in all the time when the weather is bad. She is currently on D&H Build up cubes but still seems a bit ribby and a little too lea for my liking. Any other feeds that would help her put more weight on? Perhaps adding sugar beet or linseed oil to her diet? Was thinking of putting her onto A&P Weight gain mix. Any ideas? x

I have a TB same age, same workload, same time in the field.
You could add SB and Linseed both good options. What I find with my TB though is hay really makes the difference. If he doesn't have enough hay or it's not good enough quality I'm fighting a loosing battle. He's only on half a scoop of mix at the moment per day and he looks amazing, bit fat actually because I am literally pumping him full of really good quality hay. He doesn't stand for a second without any and he's always got some wasted on the floor. Not ideal as far as cost goes but at least I know he's having more than enough and it's cheaper than feed.
Last winter he got really thin as I was pregnant he was on livery and they weren't giving him enough hay. They swore he was getting more than enough but I knew he wasn't! This winter I'm in charge of the hay and bingo fat horse again ;).

I got weight onto my TB with Rowan Barbary's readymash extra. She was glowing within a few weeks of starting it. But I agree with Firewell that the best thing is adlib good quality hay - this winter is costing me a fortune as they're hardly out as the fields are so wet!

She is currently on adlib hay, it's my own so there is no shortage of it and it's the best quality hay you can get. will probs put some LS oil in x

Got mine on Baileys No 4 (gave up on Calm and Condition as we didn't get the condition part!) and she is great on it; energised but not silly. I find good grass is best (ours is poor generally) but she gets lots of haylage, the no 4, Speedibeet and Hifi Original and looks great. I really struggled last year to get weight on her. I did give her micronised linseed last winter (before trying Baileys No 4) and it made her lovely and shiny but not necessarily weightier.

You don't mention any quantities of feed that you are giving? No conditioning feed works unless you feed the recommended amounts

She was orginally on half a scoop twice a day of the cubes. Which I read on the bag and it was meeting the guidelines on the bag. But now she is on half of cubes, full conditioning chaff and half of sugarbeet when dried. I think it makes up one scoop when wet. she still has a few carrots thrown in too.
She seems to like it, and she has only been on it a few days but her coat seems to have gotten suddenly shiney x
