Afternoon all!

I was wondering if anyone could give any recommendations for a high energy food that is not fattening? One of our polo ponies is still carrying a little too much weight ( she came in from her winter off looking like she'd swallowed a barrel...) She is playing 2 or 3 times a week and on non playing days she's ridden or lead on a set for around 1 hour of interval training with one day off a week. She's fit - but she's just lacking that extra spark she usually has.

We've starting bringing her in over night so she's not stuffing herself (even though she was in the shortest grass, I suppose its still very high in sugar?) , so she's lost the belly, but I need her to have energy and spark, without her putting on weight with it.

Any advice? She is currently on rolled oats with some Dengie Alpha A Lite for breakfast and supper, with garlic and Pure Joint supplement, as well as electrolytes when she's played.

I found A&P power and performance a really good value high energy feed. I would give it to my hunter & I gave cups rather than scoops, so it lasted well. Although my hunter always needed extra feed to keep weight on, I prefer smaller meal sizes rather than large ones.

I also feed readigrass rather than alfa-a, as there is no sugar in it and they love eating it.

Just had a look at the Allen & Page website - the Power & Performance mix looks ideal - thank you, going to order a couple of bags and see how we go. Many thanks!

Also - good tip re the Readigrass, I don't know why I assumed that had sugar in it, that might work well!

Hehe....rocket fuel sounds good! We have ordered some bags of P&P, if that doesn't have the desired effect we'll try the rocket fuel! Thank you for the tip, much appreciated!

Balanced horse feeds have an impressive range of high energy feeds. if you don't have any luck with a&p, give balanced's advice line a call!

I used spiller power cubes on a wee mare who lacked sparkle at times and was a very good doer, they gave her ping without putting weight on her :) x

Thanks for all the tips - we bought some A&P Power & Performance and she's been on it for a 5 days now, and was played this weekend, and there was definately some more spark there, she didn't tire like she has been - in fact she even jig-jogged off the ground at the end! There is definately more fuel in the tank!

Thank you to all who helped - very pleased with the result!
