I was wondering if you could help me I have a young section D who I would like to show but really am struggling to get the weight on him At the minute he lives out at night and in during the day when he gets 2 feeds of topspec conditioning cubes and a sugar beet along with seaweed to help keep his coat dark but it doesnt seem to be making much difference to him. Any thoughts or suggestions please?

Is he on grass ATM?

Everyone seems to be having problems keeping weight off (all 5 of ours are on diets) not putting it on.

I'm not expert but something sounds amiss here.

he is on a huge field of grass at night and I have had his teeth etc checked I was wondering if you could recommend a feed etc to try

How old is he?
I dont have much experience with native types, But When i needed to get weight on my skinny WB last year, Alfa-A oil fed with Bailys top line cubes and speediBeet seemed to do the trick.
How much work is he in, and out of interest why is he in during the day?

Is he getting adlib good quality hay or haylage when he is in during the day?

What condition score is he at the moment - can you see his ribs?

With a Native type go for a fibre and oil based diet, even underweight horses can still contract laminitis, and being designed to live off very poor pasture, they often have problems when fed too much sugar - laminitis, EMS, Diabetes etc. Phone some feed companies and see what they have to offer.

thanks for all your advice, he does get ad lib hay during the day (as thats what we make so its free!) I think its just a question of time as a friend once said to me it takes till they are 8 then a cob reaches his full potential. I am just being greedy as he went to hoys last year and I want to go this year!!

Does he get any vit and min supplements? I feed the topspec conditioning cubes but I was under the impression that they should always be fed with a balancer or broad spectrum vit and min supplement?
