hi there, im looking for some feeding advice please bear with me as not used this before, i have a cob x tb who is 11 15.1hh who is a good doer and a sec d who is 8 who is 14.3hh who is a good does also they both live out 24/7 come in about twice a week and get ridden about twice a week they both tend to get a bit giddy and are bolshy at times therefore dont always get a feed and i am giving them hay every other day in the field as they are still rather fat!! :o i currently give them hi fi lite but looking changing to hi fi good doer (they both sometimes get a little niggle of a cough due to straw or hay i think) i feed them lo-cal and looking at changing from baileys outshine to dengie fibremix easy and then they get a scoop of garlic, can anyone help me with what they think or any other ideas? thank you x

Sounds like they need more work and no feed.
Several of mine get no hard feed and live on grass and hay, if they are not working hard they do not really need any especially at this time of year.

why do so many people rate outshine? have any of you used fibremix easy by dengie? when they work tbh they do work harder now its getting lighter i am working them more now and started long reining them too x

Do I understand your post correctly, that your horses don't get 'hard feed' every day?
One of the first rules of feeding is that horses should have consistency. If they only work twice a week, they are in light work and really only need hay. Good doers rarely need more than this, unless they are in hard work, eg hunting twice a week.

Sounds like they need a general vitamin suppliment given daily in a small amount of plain chaff, hi fi lite or good doer or something along those lines.
they sound like they need exercise or careful grazing manegment.

i agree with this..you cant just give them hard feed when you bring them in to ride twice a week....hay should do them...maybe a bucket lick in the field to be sure they get all their vitamins and minerels.....feed should be consistent and routine...
hope this helps

Firstly try to ride them more and poss just stick a vit/min block in their field if they don't need the feed. You can't just feed as and when I'm afraid.

hello there, i already have a lick in the feed a general vitamin supplement, as to the hard feed i got advised as they are good doers they dont need a feed every day esp as they are fat! they get hay and grass! now i am confused, what are your reviews on topspecs products?

I think the advice being given and it is good advice, is don't hard feed.
My lad is a good doer, came out of winter fatter than he went in, just on
a large haynet for overnight, free access to the field and a small handfull of
chaff so he didn't feel left out when his friend was fed.
One thing we do if we can't ride, is keep him moving round the field, not chasing him, just keeping him moving, he chooses to trot or canter.
Now the grass is coming through he just gets the chaff, as he really needs to lose the weight
