I am in need of some advice about feeding my horse. He is a 9 yr old TB gelding, who used to be a racehorse. He finished racing in December 2007 and since then has been living out. I have all sorts of different advice re. feed and am really confused! He is very thin and needs a bit more weight and condition.

At the moment, as well as his grass, he gets Winergy Equilibrium and two slices of hay. He is in light-moderate work, with 45 mins-1 hr schooling or hacking per day. He does have slight gut problems and his tummy is quite sensitive.

I was thinking of changing to Alfa-A oil but wondered if I should combine this with something else, and what? Thanks!

Contact one of the big feed companies - they have in house nutritionists & will give you a feeding programme.

Try D&H or Allen&Page etc.....

A horse should have no less than 1.5% of bodyweight and no more than 2.5% of body weight in feed each day, including grass.

Its unusual for a horse not to have put weight on over the summer. Presumably his teeth and worming are up to date.

If you are thinking of changing to Alfa-A Oil, it might be worth giving Dengie a ring for advice just to be on the safe side.
