Feeding after perontanitus

Billy is on "baby" food atm (just nuts and chaff, soaked hay) as I have to wait for the final results of his blood test to see if his liver has now recovered. He was taken off all protein foods when he was ill.

Obviously he dropped a huge amount of weight and muscle very quickly and I currently have the thinnest horse on the yard which I HATE. He is back in work albeit very carefully as he is not having the feed for real work and obviously his entire fitness also went out of the window. I also appreciate that coming back from being so ill means his fitness will take longer as well.

The only supplement he is on atm is a red cell supplement from the vets.

Previously was on haylage, bluechip, chaff, beet and a high performance mix (and a lot more of it) and looked really well. He is a ISH (ID x TB) 17.1 5 year old and obviously his feed also reflected the fact he is still growing. He isn't an RSPCA case but the best analogy I could give is that he looks like his owner is mixing "thin" with "fit".

I am nagging my vet big time as is my YO. I want to ensure I absolutely do the very best to get him back to normal. I have only had him since the end of March as a very green baby and am struggling as don't know when riding him now if his backwardness (which he was when we started off) is due to feeling "off" or he is trying it on as I am not pushing him as hard.

Back lady out on Weds now as well. He is not working over his back - by which I mean he is not loosening off and stretching down.
 
didn't make it clear - just sounds like a rant. Has anyone experience of feeding after this illness? Do we just feed to put condition on or is there anything I should be aware of?Equally, any issues with bringing back in protein rich foods with a liver that had suffered damage? (will only do this once the blood test has shown the liver has recovered) - do you need to ramp it up gradually for the livers sake? and more than the normal gradual inroduction of new feeds for a healthy horse?
