Freddy has responded very well to the EPMS diet. Last winter he was on Alpha Alpha and oil, then as soon as the grass came through he didn't seem to need the oil anymore and this autumn I am trailing ALCAR. ALCAR seems to have made an immediate and impressive difference to his suppleness but without the grass he needs a bit more energy. Can I add oil to the ALCAR? The internet suggests not to but there is no explanation of the risks. What might go wrong if I add the two.

I have some bit E on order as well to add to the mix, might that help with energy levels?

I've got two on alcar and done some research into how it works. I can't see any reason why you wouldn't feed oil if you need the calories. I think it probably came from how many epsm horses have insulin issues and are fat, making oil an issue.

If either of mine needed more calories, I'd be happy to feed oil unless anyone knows any current.

If he's epsm them in theory he needs the vitamin e anyway, but I've been able to reduce my first one on alcar right down on vitamin e. I wouldn't expect vitamin e to give mute energy, but the disease is very surprising sometimes, so who knows?

He is not fat. He was extremely thin before the diet to the point where we kept doing blood tests and worm counts but not finding anything. I was feeding him bucket loads of competition mix and he was still too thin. He started putting on weight when he went on the EPMS diet and now he is a good weight, I just need more oomph and since the diet has had such an effect so far I was hoping I could experiment for even better results.

I'd be happy to feed him oil, based on what I know about alcar and epsm.

if your horse is not already on vit E I would try that at a high dose before adding oil. One thing at once but also it may well make a difference to the muscles and therefore the horse looser and more comfortable and possibly able to move better. Vit E appears to give muscles strength. That is not based on any horses but on trying vit E on myself. I was very surprised at the difference it made.

I am not so sure about the risks of oil and alcar and I know some people do. However there could be a better solution and I don't think there is the experience on this forum to provide the best answer to your question. I would be asking it on the FB PSSM forum where you would get a lot of comments from people who had tried to solve this problem.

Thanks both.

I am waiting for the vit E from Equimins (as per other thread) but at the moment they seem a bit lost with making a delivery to France.

I have posted on the FB group but only had one response so far.
