I'm looking at giving my horse's diet an overhaul - I've got a big goal this year and I want to throw everything that it, he's currently on very basic feed and I think that although he's going well, better quality feed could give him a boost all the same.
He's a 16.1hh 17 year old warmblood. He's a good doer, and generally very laid back and can lack forwardness and spark in the dressage (although this is more a training issue as he has plenty of energy for jumping!). He can occasionally hot up a bit, especially jumping at home or cantering in company. He's arthritic and had his hocks medicated.
In an ideal world, I'd like him a little more forward, focused and to lose some weight.
He currently gets 12 hours or so turnout on rather poor grass although he isn't helping his diet by jumping out of the field most days...the fence keeps getting higher and wider..., more or less ad lib hay when in. He gets 1/2 scoop mole valley pony nuts, 1/2 scoop hi fi lite, 1/4 scoop copra twice a day. Supplements are vetvits msm, vetvits equiflex and vetvits 14+ general supplement, and free access to a salt lick.
Work wise he does 6 days a week, a mix of hacking for a minimum of 1 hour with lots of trotting, some cantering and lots of hills [tend to do 1 long one to get proper canter work in every 10 days or so) and 30-40 minutes schooling. I jump him probably every couple of weeks or so, and he goes eventing about twice a month, currently be100 but shortly stepping up to novice.
In an ideal world, what would you feed him?
