Sorry another feeding thread :p:o

Ruby is my first Horse, so I am not very clued up on feeds.

She is a good doer, ridden 2-3 times a week (soon to be 5) mostly hacking as I am trying to build muscle on her, so do lots and lots of roadwork on hills. She is fed half a scoop of Happy Hoof, twice daily and ablib hay.

I am looking for a feed, that will help build her muscle. Obviously I know that I cannot rely on just the feed alone to build the mucsle. And that it will take work. But would be good for a feed to help assist me and give her the right mins and vits she needs to build up.

I have been recomended Baileys NO.4, topline cubes. By quite a few people. But I was just wondering, Would it be pointless to feed it to her with her Happy Hoof? correct me if I am wrong, but I know Happy Hoof, is good for good doers as it isn't fattening. So wouldn't they just cancel eachother out ?

I fed my youngster topline over summer when he was in work and its fantastic stuff! Doesnt encourage too much weight gain but really fills them out and they get a beautiful shiny coat on it :)

Personally your probably best with fibre cubes, but the best thing to do is call spillers (they make happy hoof) and see what their feed nutrionists recommend.

During the showing season last year Big Pony got a scoop of hi-fi lite and a handful of topline cubes (with a vit & hoof supplement as he's fed a fraction of the recommended quanitities).
It did exactly what you're after - added a bit of lean muscle in all the right places but i was riding 6 days a week to go with it. It doesn't take much to see an improvement in a good doer so feed like a balancer or supplement rather than a general mix. They seem to be a great source of quality protein.

Brilliant! Thank you. Well I am just waiting for the lighter evenings now and I will be riding after work (can only hack) so she will be getting more excercise to help build the muscle.

Hey - I was once completely bewildered on feed and found everyone at my yard I spoke to gave me different advice i.e. "I used this and it worked amazingly".. this is rubbish, this is the best - they are not the experts though.

Best advice I was ever given was to call and speak to a few of the proper feed companies... get some advice from their PROFESSIONAL EXPERTS. These guys have been qualified in the field.. not just fed their horses something that "appeared to have worked".

I called a few and the quality of the dialogue and how much they ask about your horse and work-load etc shows they really are there to look at your horse individually. Plus they know their stuff.

Saracen..
Spillers..
Baileys...
D&H

Talk to them and then make an informed decision - far more knowledgeable than people at the yard...

Good luck!
