Has anyone discovered how to make them tempting?!

Daddy bought some of these as our very local feedstore doesn't always stock rolled barley (and we were scraping the bin bottoms so no time to bulk buy from usual merchant!).

I guess I just assumed the boys would be quite tempted by something biscuity in the feed...as it usually looks pretty bland (no mix/cubes etc) so maybe the inclusion of ringy-things would be like pony pick & mix.

No such luck. Orangepony who is usually super keen for anything resembling a pony treat shape turned his nose up, and Brownhorse didnt entertain his tea at all! Cue cold soaking them (flobby gelatinised lumps) and hot soaking (slightly mushier gelatinised lumps) even with apples/carrots & applechaff mixed through are still a no go.

Any ideas?!

My insanely fussy horse used to pick them out no matter what I did to them! I even counted them once, all but two were left. Gave up in the end and fed something different.

I used to soak them. I would half fill a big saucepan with them, top it up with water and put the lid on and leave it in the bottom oven of the aga for 12 hours or so (either over night, or during the day). I added it to the feed and they loved it! Proper old fashioned feeding and did wonders for keeping a toothless old bear warm!

I usually feed plain old rolled barley, just happened that dad had a feed panic and bought these as no rolled barley available and couldn't get a bulk order from our neighbour until 4 days later.

Will try popping them in the aga as a cooked mush. bit of an expensive waste otherwise!! Hey ho, back to the rolled barley if they find them totally unpalatable.
