Does anyone feed boiled Barley? If so do you feed to old horses who have very few teeth? Do you cook it in a slow cooker?
Thank you in advance.

It sent my previous horse nuts. She was only having the run off from the boiled barley the hunters were having, but it sent her stupid.

She must have been very sensitive to it as she ate Barley on a hack once and came out in the most dreadful hives.

Used to in the "good old days" . YO had a special barley boiler. Then in later years I cooked it in the microwave as quicker and less messy. I think a slow cooker would work well too. These days there are so many specialist mashes on the market that do away with the need for BB.

Oh we used to cook it on the Aga it did smell lovely but sometimes boiled over making a gloopy mess and if it was too hot and burnt on the bottom it took ages to scrub out the big heavy pan. Micronised barley was much more user friendly although l rarely feed it these days.

I was thinking boiled Barley would be easier for him to eat as he needs soft feed due to lack of teeth.
I used to make boiled barley in a slow cooker. Worked like a dream and the horses loved it.
thank you

Yes I've often used a large slow cooker to boil barley.

1 of the yards has an old fashioned barley boiler which was great and kept the tackroom worm.
But Cooks just as well in the slow cooker

i fed boiled barley cooked in a slow cooker to my old mare. Fabulous for keeping weight on her, and added bonus of helping warm up the ice cold sugarbeet in the winter!

Also very cost effctive, if bought in 25kg sacks from an agricultural store, and even better direct from a farmer.

I used to love arriving at the yard on a cold winters morning to the smell of the warm barley cooked overnight in the barley cooker.
