Hi All,

I have seen many references to feeding SI horses/ponies BY and Linseed. She's already on the linseed (as of a week ago) and I am looking at sources of BY.

By far, the cheapest option is Charnwood Milling, at £37 for 25Kg. This works out at £1.80 per kilo including delivery, compared to £7 for 1kilo bought in as special order from Equus, through my local tack shop.

Obviously, 25 kilos is a LOT, even between two exmoors, which together constitute no more than 600Kg.

Has anybody fed BY longterm and noticed a vast improvement? I'm thinking of getting it anyway, just as a natural source of Vitamin Bs (esp thiamine), but am concerned as much about the shelf life as I am about wasting yet more money on useless supplements marketed by hype!

Thanks in advance for any input!

Hello!
I feed both mine brewars yeast all the time winter and summer, summer for the flies and coats, winter for coats and digestion and it makes my mare a bit calmer! i think its gold label stuff i use but have also used www.naturalhorsesupplies.co.uk (i think thats right) they do cheap brewars yeast they do linseed to. i find a 900g bag lasts ages i have a cob and a tb type. i love my by i have t say. good luck

I've had my Charnwood milling sack open three months so far and it's absolutely fine. I move about 5 kilos into a plastic bucket and roll the sack back up (it comes well wrapped). Like most people with barefoot horses who feed it, I feed it at 50 grams per day per horse. It's a great all-round supplement high in B vitamins, with chromium and selenium that are difficult for horses to obtain elsewhere. Commercial mixes use chemicals which seem not to be so easy for horses to actually take into their systems.

Lots of people on UKNHCP.myfastforum.org have reported big improvements in foot quality. I have seen a big improvement in coat quality in one friend's horse. My horses' feet were great already, but it certainly hasn't done them any harm - they love it!

I use the Gold Label one, about £9 for 1.5kg so the Charnwood is good value but it would last me a year at least and I'm not willing to risk it deteriorating once it's opened. As to shelf life, haven't a clue but you could always sell some off to friends and make a profit!

Thanks guys. MFH, I don't have any horsey friends interested as yet, but will certainly have a go persuading them! If it's fine after 3 months, I might just take a chance. Feeding two at ~30g per day, I'd get through it at a slow but steady rate and that's a good idea about taking an aliquot and putting it in a bucket (I assume you mean with lid!). Am thinking of getting their linseed, too, as I've already noticed a difference in Chloe's coat shining - I bought 3Kg for £9 a week and a half ago.
