Any tips from you clever people please? My cob mare needs to lose some weight despite living out unrugged. I'm weighing her hay, but like to leave her some oat chaff as a back up. She wastes so much of this if I feed it in a feed skip or trug. She just tips the bowl over and most of the chaff is spread out on the ground. Has anyone come up with anything effective to avoid wastage please?

Mine will hoover up off the floor if they tip feed out. If she’s leaving it to go to waste and not eating it up, does she really need it?

one of mine did that when I tried to use straw chaff as part of his weight control. It was a total waste to see it all over the floor but another more grateful horse came in to clear up for me. :D:D

I solved the problem by reducing his hay by say 1kg and replacing it with a dengie chaff (dampened) that I found that he liked and ate up. (I was on weight control)

Have you tried the good ol' fashioned method of putting a few bricks in the bottom of the bucket and then putting the chaff on top? Would have the benefit of making the bucket heavier to tip over so would hopefully deter her? :)

Another possibility (although on the costly side I'm afraid!) is to get one of those slow feeders to put the chaff in - they're a lot bigger than your standard trug but also would have the bonus of making it a game which could also persuade her not to dump it on the floor? :)

Thanks all. Yes I've tried bricks but she still manages to chuck the very large container out of the shelter and on to the mud outside! I think she prefers al fresco dining!

On a more positive note, now I've cut her hay back she has definitely wasted less, so that's good!
