Hi

I've recently bought a 4 year old for dressage. I had him Xrayed and they showed up that he had a moderate bony spur on one hock. I bought him knowing this as he was perfect in every other way and he passed his flexion tests etc.

I'm wondering whether feeding Cortaflex now, would reduce the likelihood of the spur causing a problem in the future?

Any thought anyone?

Thanks

Hi cp1,

I think that is a great idea. I have a New Forrest pony and have fed her cortaflex since backing her 4 years ago. I took some advice, and basically those that I spoke to (more than one) all seemed to agree that it is never to early to start feeding a joint supplement. Anything that protects them from wear and tear is a bonus, and better than vets bills and long lay offs.

I would agree .I have 6 tb and he has just had op for hock fusion. If this had prevented the need for surgery I would have used it.He has bony spurs on his hock but he was in alot of pain and kept going lame ,hes not the type of horse who would retire either.Hence the need for surgery.
I would ask your vet re spurs because if they have already started the supplement would protect the cartlidge ,Im not sure if the supplement would prevent further bone growth. This is a interesting subject because the surgeon told me I wouldnt need supplements after surgery as his other leg was fine.Might ask vet tommorrow as he is coming out to change bandages.

Hiya, i used to feed Cortaflex to my gelding that has arthritis in his hocks but after a while i felt it wsn't working as well. Naf then brought out five star superflex so i decided to give it a try. My horse has now been on it for two and a bit years and i rate it better than cortaflex.

Seen the results of cortaflex with a 19yr old tb,never had it in his life, his stance was awful when he came but within 3wks the difference was amazing!!Have my lad on it!He is 13 this yr but hard work is something he has ever known

lol, want him around forever!!H has been on it 3 yrs now, cant tell you if it works as he never had a problem in the 1st place(bugger has more vits, etc than us,lol)!!However,as good as it is,they are like us,some things suit some better than others, trial and error!!
