My yearling colt (19 months) has been fed the mare and youngstock mix since he was 6 months old and has been doing well on it, he is 14.2/14.3 supposed to reach 16hh/16.1hh and has 1 scoop (large) of the mix and 11/2 scoops of chaff (varies depending on whats in stock, (random, random, fibergy and then alfalfa (hasn't started the alfafa yet)).). He lives out 24/7 and has a rug on. However, although he isn't overweight even for a yearling he is very hyper and I'm worried that the feed isn't helping. Should I reduce the mare & youngstock mix and add some suregrow or just add some suregrow to what he's already getting. When I phoned the D&H helpline a few months ago (5 months or so) they suggested 11/2 mix and 11/2 chaff but he was putting on weight with that and as he had just moved home I didn't want to upset his system by adding suregrow, so I cut the mix down by 1/2 a scoop. I'm just wondering if I'm doing the right thing. He also gets 2 slices of horsehage (blue bag) a day and we may be putting him onto the green bag if he starts to lose any weight.

Thanks

I'd ring D&H again. I've never fed a specific youngstock mix. Last summer my yearling was showing and on A&P Weight Gain, D&H Suregrow and Alfalfa-Oil. As Autumn turned into Winter that changed to a generic mix, Suregrow, Alfalfa-oil and Sugar Beet. I stopped the mix over xmas, as he was doing too well and he's been weaned off the Suregrow now, on the advice of D&H - he's 21 months old and 15.3hh.
