So I missed all the food and drink yesterday as I was a bit late but wanted to go as they were coming over our land and thought that deserved a mince pie at least.

However, when I rode many, many years ago I can't remember that foot followers were given food and drink by the host. Is my memory bad, or is this something that has become the norm in more recent times?

Back in the day, only mounted followers were offered food, but now it's offered to everyone. I think the mounted field get priority trays as they aren't in the position to help themselves - footies can go to the table/car boot and grab food.

You are absolutely right - back in the day it was very much for mounted field only. A foot follower taking food would have been frowned on. But now it does seem pretty much universal. Most regular foot followers are good enough to grab a tray and help the mounted field get their food, pour port or whatever is circulating and make sure all cups etc are collected and neatly returned. If you ask nicely they'll clear up poo, stamp in divots etc - or at least we do! We rely on landowners for thier generosity in allowing us onto their land. It would be impolite to leave a mess.

But I digress. Yes foot followers get fed too now but did not in the past. Hope you had a great time!!
