Just out of interest, can I ask what people feed for the following:

1. Breeding Mares
2. Barren Mares
3. Weanlings

Whether you feed hay, haylege or our out to grass, and if this is rationed or ad-lib.

Breeding mares Small amount of Alfa A oil ,Saracen mare care mix and topped up with stamm 30 if not feeding enough mix.
EG 6lb mix to 250 gms stamm 30 for most of mine.
Barreen mares Small amount of Alfa A oil ,saracen cool mix plus a top up of stamm 30 but would then put them on Mare care around 6 weeks before covering as it contains omega oils etc.
My weanlings are on Saracen level grow plus a handful of Alfa A oil plus Stamm 30 at the correct rates depending on size, growth rate and weight of the foal.
All have ad lib italian ryegrass haylage and turnout in the field.

Yearling & weanling are on Alfa A, speedibeet, Bailey's Stud mix, BSS, carrots, garlic. My mares were on Pasture mix which was changed over gradually in the last 4mths to Stud mix. They are fed haylage ad-lib.

broodmare - pasture mix, alfaA oil, hi-fi, readigrass, carrots, vit/mineral supplement last 3 months plus higher protein feed last 3 months

weanlings - pasture mix, alfaA oil, hi-fi, readigrass, vit/mineral supplement, carrots - basically what they got used to eating with the mare

both ad-lib good quality hay

For the winter...Ad lib horsehage, comes in large round bales, also have a large round bale of hay on offer in the barn too, feed baileys nuts and baileys balancer with some alfa a and speedy beet, will put on stud mix in Jan/Feb time, foals have the same but a small amount of hard feed. rock salt block and field lick always on offer. Summer just balancer, field lick and rock salt and lots of good quality grass

Mine live out so have hay in the fields at this time of year plus for the mares high fibre cubes, Alfa A, sugar beet.
Gerty also gets calm and condition in hers.
They move to D&H stud mix 3 months before foaling.

Youngstock get D&H suregrow, alfa a and sugar beet.

1. Breeding Mares - haylage, almost ad-lib unless they're too fat, Horselyx blocks, and Bailey's stud balancer for the last 8 weeks of pregnancy and the first 8 weeks of lactation.
2. Barren Mares - what are they?

3. Weanlings - ad-lib haylage and a MODEST amount of Bailey's SB with Graze-on and some added Sure Limb (because we don't feed the recommended amount of BSB)

I breed Irish Draughts and they're good doers - I don't want overfat mares or youngsters with OCD. It's more than adequate - I have 2x 2 year olds who are already 16.2 with 10 inches of bone!
