I'm looking to add something to Major's diet.

Weight wise I'm quite happy with him, however I feel now his work is upped and I'm doing a lot in the school he needs something extra.

I'm after something to help improve top line and over all condition alongside correct work.

However it needs to be totally none heating and prefer no cereals as he can get sharp and a bit hot headed.

Currently he has ad-lib hay (generally a piece and a half of a big square bale - but I put 2 pieces in), out on good grass for the time of year for 7-8 hours a day. He has two feeds of 2 scoops ultra grass and a scoop of sugar beet.

Open to suggestions has would really like to get some more condition on him now that we are able to do some proper build up work :).

Here he is currently.

Looking at what your currently feeding I would suggest either adding some Topspec balancer, or maybe some Champion milk pellets?

Thanks for the reply, that's what I was getting at when I said I needed to add to it now he's doing the work so I can get some muscle on him. So yes protein is they way to go. Will look at those - thanks!

Thanks for all these! Given me something to think about.

Like the look of key flow, only problem I can see is sourcing it. How much of it do you feed? The Dodson and horrell looks good too.

Have you thought about micronised linseed?? Mine is looking super on 2 scoops of very sloppy speed-beet and 1 scoop livery nuts twice a day with 200gms of linseed.

You can order the KeyFlow from Amazon with free next day delivery :) and you get a discount if you set up a regular order.

I feed it to one of mine as his 'main' feed so he gets 700g a day in his speedibeet, but Indy gets it as an add-on and gets probably 350g along with his chaff, StayCool mix and linseed. Both boys are TB's, in work, and are doing really well on it. :)

The two best sources of protein are soy and alfalfa. Both are extremely high on methyonine and lysine, the two limiting amino-acids for muscle production. Alfalfa is much more user friendly as the protein levels aren't as high as in soy - with soy you only need carefully calculated amounts so its easy to overdo. I would suggest alfalfa cubes, which are long stem fiber but high on quality protein - plus most horses find them extremely palatable!

oats linseed and alfafa would all be options and a good general purpose vit and mineral supplement if he's not on one.
