Feeding for energy and not weight gain

Forget the feed, up the work and increase the fitness. Energy = calories so there is nothing you can feed that is going to provide 'energy' without putting weight on. The fitter you can get them, the more energy they will naturally have.
 
She's recovering from Tildren due to hock spavin, but has coffin joint arthritis too in both fronts (unmedicated) so bringing back into work has been fairly slow. She's doing 8 mile hacks at w/t/c, popping logs out hacking and the very odd schooling session. I take her into the field for a blast, and she's taking off with me a fair amount (safely I might add, she's not going hell for leather, and I'm happy for her explosions), she just needs a bit more oomph.
 
Oats. I find mine burns them off because he puts more oomph in to his work so they don't go on his waistline. He is fit too :) as a completely un connected point if she struggles with the coffin joints in future do consider taking shoes off :). Just being fit doesn't always generate extra energy.
