Hi, just need a bit of feeding advise please! I have a lovely section D who is of the more modern, tall athletic build, rather than the traditional stocky, short, with long body, and does tend to keep the weight off pretty well. I work him 6 dyas a weeka and am preparing for some local show. He is pretty fit now but is seriously lacking in energy. He has always been a bit of a loon really but since he has been fit he's just not interested. I an feeding him hifi original and top spec feed balacer. He was on top spec leisure supplement but i put him on the feed balancer in the hope it would give him a bit more umph but it hasn't. He is looking really well on it, a bit too well really, so i have had to cut his hifi a liitle. I basically need a none fattening high enery feed, that doesn't contain sugar as he has issues with sugar!!!! I did think about spillers quick energy release. Badminton, or baileys feeds would be good as thats what my local merchant sells! thansk for reading!

How about Baileys endurance mix? Apparently it is not really for conditioning but provides slow release energy.

What about putting him on HiFi lite? Its approved by the laminitis trust so its safe as far as sugars and starch go. I used to feed my welsh D Spillers response (It was a while back I think it could have changed names now) It was a quick release energy feed, just what he needed round a course of show jumps. Feeding this along with oil which gives longer lasting energy worked for him. If your working your boy enough and he's not out on plush grass a instant release feed shouldn't put any weight on. Only thing would be the sugar content, if thats a big consieration a high oil/fibre diet would be best, though I feed this to my tb to try to give her less energy... not more. So I'm not sure, best thing to do would to ring a few feed companies, or alternatively email, they are usually willing to help.

What about putting him on Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer and you could probably stay on the Hi-Fi Original? Or change the hi-fi to Alfa A Lite as I believe alfalfa gives more energy?

D&H surelimb suppliment, designed for horses in hard work that need more energy but are already on max amounts of hard feed, but alse good for fattys, laminintics etc - those on restricted food, but needing more energy...

It was the only thing that livened up my lazy mare without worrying about laminitis (but that was a few years ago, so you may want to check its still suitable cos the packaging looks different....)

It may be a case of trial and error though! Different horses respond differently...
